2008 Toyota 4Runner

Overview

For 2008 the Toyota 4Runner midsize sport utility vehicle adds yet another important safety feature, to the existing wide range, with standard roll-sensing side-curtain air bags. The fourth-generation Toyota 4Runner combines off-road competence with high standards for everyday driving comfort, for refinement and safety, packaging these qualities in a design that is youthful and sporty.

Engine and Performance

The 2008 4Runner is available with a choice of V-6 or V-8 engines, in two-wheel and four-wheel drive models. The standard 4.0-liter, dual overhead cam (DOHC) V-6 engine produces 236 horsepower, with 266 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. The available 4.7-liter, i-Force, DOHC V-8 produces 260 horsepower with 306 pound-feet of torque at 3,400 rpm. In both engines, variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) helps provide substantial low-end and midrange torque. The 4Runner's standard five-speed automatic transmission adapts gear-shifting patterns according to driving conditions and driver input.

Body and Styling

The rugged body-on-frame construction utilizes full-length, boxed-section frame rails that employ body mounts of a large diameter for high torsional rigidity and excellent cabin noise isolation. The 4Runner has a sporty design and extensive convenience features, as well as a spacious and versatile interior. The two-tone dashboard houses a three-pod instrument cluster with orange illumination. A vehicle level sensor detects when the 4Runner is on an incline and compensates the fuel gauge reading.

Safety Features

The star safety system includes vehicle stability control with traction control, as well as anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist to help provide optimal vehicle control and driving safety. Advanced front air bags for driver and front passenger; front passenger seat sensor; and standard front- and second-row side-curtain and front seat-mounted side air bags are the passive safety features available in the 4Runner.
